A man from York is missing after he was caught in an avalanche near a Spanish ski resort, the Foreign Office said.

John Hogbin, 42, was with two fellow mountaineers when the avalanche struck on Sunday in Spain's Sierra Nevada mountain range.

Search teams employed two helicopters and rescue dogs to find him on Sunday without success and the search has been resumed.

Mr Hogbin, originally from York, is believed to have been living in Spain.

The avalanche was one of the biggest in the mountain range in many years.

Mr Hogbin was caught up in it to the west of a ski resort above Granada.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We are aware a British National was reported missing in the Sierra Nevada mountains on 20 February.

"We are in contact with the Spanish authorities who have resumed a search of the area.

"We are also in the process of contacting next of kin to offer consular assistance."
