A unit used to assess prisoners coming to the end of their sentences is to be temporarily closed following concerns about "recent incidents".

The governor of Maghaberry Prison said an investigation into the Prisoner Assessment Unit would be carried out.

Pat Maguire said staff raised concerns about incidents at the facility which is at the site of Crumlin Road prison.

He added that all prisoners who are currently housed at the unit would be returned to Maghaberry Prison.

He said his decision had been taken in conjunction with the Director General of the NI Prison Service, Colin McConnell.
