Clapham Common could be turned into a campsite equipped for 10,000 people to celebrate the royal wedding.

Organisers are planning to turn the south London common into a campsite for three nights for revellers on a budget.

A giant television screen and free tea is also planned for the pop-up campsite from 28 April to May 1.

Lambeth Council could not confirm if a licence had been granted for the event but said if it did go ahead there would be strict rules on noise and litter.

'Affordable option'

"Clapham Common has staged a number of large scale events so this isn't a one off," a council spokesman said.

"However if the event does go ahead it will be the responsibility of the organisers to ensure the common is returned to its original state.

"We would also ensure that council representatives are present to monitor the event."

Melanie Oxley, chairman of the Friends of Clapham Common, said they were yet to be consulted on the proposal.

"We don't think the common can take 10,000 campers for three days," she added.

"If we have bad weather it's going to end up looking like Glastonbury did."

Organisers Camp Royale said the campsite would have 24-hour security, hot showers, toilet facilities, a quiet zone and a family zone.

They also want to create a "glamping" zone for luxury campers with 18ft (5.4m) tipis available equipped with sheepskin rugs and tables.

Dan Cotter, a spokesman for Camp Royale, said: "We hope that this affordable option will appeal to people who thought they couldn't afford to join in the fun."

Prince William and Kate Middleton will marry at Westminster Abbey on 29 April.
