Cardiff City ended their four-match winless run with a comfortable victory over Derby County to reignite their push for automatic promotion.

Jay Bothroyd struck his 18th goal of the season from the spot after Craig Bellamy was fouled.

Dekel Keinan doubled the lead after the break heading home Chris Burke's corner before Paul Quinn made it 3-0.

Peter Whittingham wrapped up the points with a volley before Robbie Savage scored a consolation penalty.

The victory was no less than the Bluebirds deserved as they took Derby to task, and they climbed to third on goal difference over arch-rivals Swansea and four points off Norwich in second.

Struggling Derby will be counting the cost of the defeat though after picking up yet more injuries.

Paul Green was stretchered off with a suspected knee injury eight minutes from the end of the first half when he caught his studs in the turf, and Gareth Roberts was later carried off.

And Nigel Clough's side could have found themselves back in it soon after when Quinn's mistake let in Green who beat keeper Tom Heaton, but Jlloyd Samuel was able to clear.

Keinan doubled Cardiff's lead with a header three minutes after the break, before Steve Davies missed a glorious chance at the other end from six yards.

Quinn ensured there would be no way back for the visitors firing home Whittingham's delightful cross.

And Whittingham sealed a fine win just before the hour with a superb volley from eight yards.

Savage claimed a consolation deep into injury time when Jamie Ward was fouled by Stephen McPhail.
