The University Guide 2012 is published this week, with Cambridge beating arch-enemy Oxford to take first place in the ranking of UK universities. So how much do you know about the UK's hallowed halls of learning?

It's Oxford, according to the university. There is no clear date of foundation, but teaching existed at Oxford in some form in 1096. Records suggest Cambridge University grew out of an association of scholars that was formed in 1209, making it the second-oldest university in the English-speaking world. It's the University of the Highlands and Islands, which is the only university based in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. It gained full university status in February this year. Roehampton became a university in 2004 and Gloucestershire in 2001. It's nursing, with 27,079 people accepted on to nursing degree courses in 2010, according to the University and Colleges Admissions Service (Ucas). It's followed by design studies with 18,819 people accepted, law with 16,979 and psychology with 16,138. It's Jose Mourinho, the current manager of Real Madrid and former Chelsea manager. He studied sports science at the Technical University of Lisbon. It's mature students, according to the organisation which represents university leaders. If you are aged 21 or over when you enrol in undergraduate study you are considered a mature student. It's Oscar Wilde, who attended university in both Dublin and Oxford. It's £3,428, according to the guide. Cambridge University spent £8,612 per student in 2009-10.
